COATS: The only thing that could distract from JLo’s inauguration medley

By January 23, 2021No Comments

Fair play to Jennifer Lopez for squeezing a Let’s Get Loud mention into her ‘America is brilliant’ inauguration medley performance, but we can’t say that’s the abiding memory. It was the coats, for us.

Here are some we loved, and some more we’re coveting, because what ELSE is there to be at…

[restrict]

1. First up, Dr Biden

We’ll use the doctor title as many times as is humanly possible over the duration of her husband’s four year term because, well… deserved. Her fur-trimmed blue coat was a hit at Wednesday’s ceremony, and the matching mask was a finishing touch of pure class.

2. Next, here’s lookin’ at you, Michelle

Burgundeeelicious. And the BELT. And the bounnnnnnce on that blow-dry. What a woman. She has legs that go on for miles and her ability to style herself extends just as far (we’re sure she has help on that front, but still. Fashion goals). This whole ensemble was a hit, but the coat really sent us.

3. And as for our new favourite human, Amanda Gorman…

She read so powerfully that she managed to upstage Ireland’s favourite disappointment, Garth Brooks. And Lady actual Gaga. And JLo. And (some might say) even new president Joe. The power of her words were matched with power dressing: The yellow coat drawing the eye so that the world would hear the beauty of what she had to say.

4. Our last inauguration adoration is for Ella Emhoff’s Miu Miu coat

While this coat divided opinions, style wise, we’re in full support of anyone who wears an embellished Miu Miu creation over a Batsheva dress and looks entirely nonchalant about the whole thing. Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff’s daughter was ATTENDING that inauguration.

5. Following Ella, we’ve got Coat Middleton. We mean KATE. Sorry.

More often than not, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge in the UK, has to make her coat her full outfit. She’s obliged to do many outdoor events, especially in Covid times, and so she has a coat selection akin to the shoedrobe of Imelda Marcos. Impeccably tailored and always glam, she’s a coat connoisseur.

6. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and her lovely stunningly-beigeley coat

Truthfully, RHW could wear practically anything and we’d be straight onto Zara to emulate the look. But our fingers have never typed Z-A-R-A D-U-P-E quicker than when we saw this camel creation. And yes, coats, but like… LOOK at that turtle neck.

7. Lastly, the impossibly stylish Olivia Palermo

It takes a special kind of person to pull houndstooth off with aplomb, and she’s done it. This is stunning, and our only additional advice would be: Wear an outfit under there. Olivia got a free pass because this was likely a fashion shoot. She’d be absolutely baltic going out like that in Irish January.
