Just like us: The aspirational lie sold to us by Youtube stars

Youtube has produced many megastars. None so mega as Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson, the diamonds in the internet’s crown. They are the definition of commodity culture, they are ludicrously wealthy, and they fascinate Sarah Maria Griffin

At Christmas, my sister surprises me with a bright pink cardboard box. Inside it, wrapped in layers of pink tissue covered in stars, is a black cardboard box, printed with iridescent lines, like television static. Inside that box is a makeup palette, entitled Controversy, developed by internet veterans and godfathers of Youtube, Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson. I hold it in my hands: the one of the products of a multi-part, highly stylised vlog series about Dawson and Star’s collaboration. Hours and hours of video footage about the design, development, production and release of this object, amongst others. My sister waited hours in a digital line to get it for me, this hard piece of internet. God, we were truly influenced.
