Play-Doh was invented to clean wallpaper.
In 1933, Cleo and Noah McVicker, owners of Kutol, a Cincinnati-based soap company invented the product in response to a request from Kroger grocery stores to develop a cleaner that would lift soot from wallpaper. Noah mixed a potion of flour, water, salt and detergent and the putty was a huge success. But then came the introduction of vinyl wallpaper and suddenly the McVicker’s popularity dropped.
